I made it! The flights were long but every time I was seated at emergency exits = lots of room! Note to everyone: never switch airlines at Heathrow! It's massive and crazy intimidating.
The girls are a blast. It's very easy to talk to the youngest because she uses very few verbs. It's mostly "Pferd" and "Schaf" and "lustig" (horse, sheep, silly/funny). The older one speaks so fast and I seldom understand her but she is great at correcting my mistakes and knows a bit of English so we still get on really well! The house is a farmhouse from the 1780's (!) and is huge and light, very European. It's set in a valley and from the top of the nearest hill you can see the nearby villages and there's a great view of the alps! I can actually see the Austrian border from my window! I'll post some photos asap!
Sunday we had a few friends over and while the German was way too fast for me, it was great practice and I managed to catch a few jokes! The family is Dutch, so I've already accidentally picked up a few Dutch words too! Along with the Bavarian dialect, I will soon have doubled the number of languages I can speak! My lifelong goal of 6 languages is in sight!
The other family brought their Au Pair, so I have met my first friend/colleague/peer! We're going to Salzburg on Saturday!
Yesterday they took me on a little tour of the ferry port, where you can see the islands near our side of the lake. There is a convent on one island and a monastery on the other, and in the summer time the water is shallow enough to walk chest-deep from one island to the other. On the men's island (It's named Herreninsel - literally, "Men's Island") is a castle built as a replica of Versailles (complete with a hall of mirrors) by the Mad King Ludwig. As soon as the weather is nicer I'm there!
Today I also had my first driving lesson! I think it went well?? It is very odd teaching your left foot to drive when the right foot already knows what to do. And the clutch is soo resistant! Do all stick shift drivers have really strong left legs? I'm soon going to look like half a speed skater.
I'm noticing my English spelling is getting way worse as I learn more German - so forgive me! It's my own pet peeve! More to come + photos! Thank you all for your comments - great to hear from you!
