This was a full week! The girls were home sick three mornings and have been trickier than usual lately, so I worked a lot of extra hours, and I am ready for the weekend! I met up with friends last night to watch the Germany/France game and then went over to the small concert hall nearby and heard my friend Gabby sing her recital piece. The plan originally was to get picked up by Silvia, but she couldn't find my house on her Tom Tom, and got totally lost. So I drove myself, late, and on the way realized I couldn't remember where the bar actually was. I parked and was looking for a ticket machine, when I saw Gabby - she was parked and someone had just reversed into her car. She was driving her (scary) boss' car too! So we took photos of her car, prayed together, then she ran off to her rehearsal and gave me directions! She sang amazingly and then joined us as we headed back to watch the Brazil/Columbia game. Lots of fun watching that with Neil, who would shout at the tv in Spanish, causing everyone to think he actually was Columbian. Today is kind of cloudy and sad, but I'm planning on visiting the Islands with Eliz and Gabby. And then if the weather holds out there's a party for Midsummer tonight (they're celebrating a couple weeks late...).
Canada day was a great day though, no idea why, it was like a little reminder in a pretty bad week of what a great day here can be like. I wore a Canada day Tshirt from Fort Saskatchewan's Canada Day Parade 12 years ago that I "borrowed" from my mom and my Canada headband from Sara! And I searched all over town for mini pie crusts and pecans to make butter tarts to no success (I was even going to settle for a pecan pie, which is technically American, right? But they don't have the right pie crusts here - just the spongy ones. Also, no pecans! I can't even find a word to translate it to ask anyone. Not the first time I've gone looking, either. Honestly, I never knew baking would be such a culture shock!). But it was gorgeous weather, I biked to Italian class, I learned absolutely no Italian but enjoyed chatting with all my retired friends about their fancy Italian vacation anyway, we all played outside, I went for a walk and watched the sun set between the hills behind our house, and it was just really relaxed and summery! Made for a great memory and gave me so much to be thankful for. It was an awful week but it wasn't a ruined one!
Also! Last weekend we took a quick day trip to Passau, which is a bit crazy cause it's not nearby, but was gorgeous! It's where the Danube and Inn rivers meet, and just before, the Ilz meets the Danube. Where the rivers meet you can actually see a colour change in the water and it is so cool to see. The Inn comes through the alps so it's a clear, light blue-grey, whereas the Danube is a darker blue-green. We took a boat tour to see the water and then climbed to the top of the citadel to get a good view of the town. In 30 degrees it was so hot, but totally worth it!
And that was one of the last must see places on my list, so it's the last big trip I'll be taking before I fly home! Since Tori's been here, I've been pretty homesick. Being totally broke, and maybe even, if at all possible, a little bit travelled out doesn't really help either. The next few weekends I hope to just enjoy Prien and the Chiemsee!
